Something Rotten In The State Of The UK

There is something rotten in the state of Denmark- or in this case, the United Kingdom.

A very concerning situation was highlighted by July 4th‘s election results. While ultimately we knew the Labour Party would win most constituencies, the presence of Reform closely behind is astonishing. Nigel Farage and his Reform party won 5 seats and were a close second in 13 seats, concluding with a worrying total of 4,073,607+ votes.[1]

Slowly but surely, we are creeping towards a nasty far-right society. Instead of fighting inflation and the cost of living, this movement is more concerned with nonsense like small boats and immigrants. Reform party and its voters echo the same rubbish of immigrants stealing their jobs and homes, of social housing going to immigrants, NHS waiting list lengthening because of immigrants. They run from multiculturalism and embrace a pure monoculture. England for the WHITE English only!  The Conservatives could not fulfil their desires so Reform is the way to go.

This means for Black, Brown, Asian and other minorities more policing, more stop and searches, and more othering. One thing this election shows is ‘We’re not like them.’ Truthfully as minorities, we have always known this but the steady crawl towards the far right, anti-wokeness and intolerance is a cruel wake up call.

Although Reform did not win the election,4 seats are enough to fuel the racism and xenophobia present in the UK.

The elections crowned Labour’s Keir Starmer the new Prime Minister, succeeding Rishi Sunak of the Conservative Party. How as a nation do we replace Conservative with Conservative Lite? Keir Starmer, the same man who called the Black Lives Matter protest in 2020 ‘a moment not a movement’. Mind you, this was after he took the knee in solidarity in front of the whole nation, broadcasted on BBC. His politics, like Aaron Burr in Hamilton, is to ‘wait here and see which way the wind will blow’ and right now it blows towards right-wing rhetoric, anti-immigration and fear-mongering. In his winning speech, Starmer proclaims ‘Today we enter the sunlight of hope’.[2] I have no hope for this right-wing labour party led by wishy-washy Starmer. The day Starmer has a unique thought, that is contrary to the loud intolerants, will be the day pigs fly.

On a positive note, real pioneers for change and integrity such as Dianne Abbott, remain in seat for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, and Jeremy Corbyn beat Labour as an Independent candidate for Islington North seat. Both are at the forefront of inclusivity and compassion and are shining testaments to the power of human decency.

Good does win, it just takes decent people who believe!

  1. Excellently written kudos to the writer. Some thought provoking ideas here, I must say I did not even look at things that deeply…. but yes a bit concerning and not to be ignored, we must hold new PM accountable inequality, justice, peace and inclusivity ideas that are not just a movement, but the way to be!
